Make like a tree…

…….and leave!

I couldn’t help myself when I saw this yesterday, nestled there slap bang in the middle of this mini forrest was me in the shape of a conifer!

I tried desperately to avoid references to the Matrix but there is something in that movie that speaks to me; 16 years on, the idea resonates out like the ripples created on the surface of that calm water above as a child, unable to resist the urge to throw a stone, made a splash.

Morpheus found me!

Once you have been awakened there is no going back to the dead half life that you once lived. There are days where you wish that you could just slot back in to be unaware and unthinking; to be one of the crowd.

But you can’t!

Back in the late seventies a recording artist by the name of Keith Green had a cover on his “No compromise” album that depicted an ancient stand-off. In the days when the king was revered as God it was utterly unthinkable to defy them without signing your own death sentence. On this cover there is a sea of spines pointed skyward as their faces are buried in the sand before a passing king; but standing poker straight amongst them all is one single soul, refusing to bow before a false god. The immediacy depicted in the accusing arm on one of the kings guards is something that is etched deeply on my mind; I had not seen that image for about twenty years but it is so very powerful that I could picture it all.

Seeing that tree yesterday brought back the memories of a thousand stories where someone who was different was made even more aware of their lack of conformity. Many of those stories were my own experiences over a lifetime of being round in a square world. The tragedy of our society is the glacial weight which falls upon our young people when they display features which isolate them from the herd; a good parent or teacher will nurture that uniqueness while teaching a measure of conformity.

The people that we remember in our lives are not the beige followers of societies expectation upon them; we remember those who had a spark of something different about them. The entire entertainment industry is made up of people who were just a bit different. You don’t pay to listen to characterless comedians or bland musicians, you want a bit of something which isn’t the norm. The bullies of the world won’t ever appreciate or accept the spice of those who challenge their blandness.

What I love about a lot of these people is that a good percentage of them were channeled into the mainstream of education and employment only to sit up from their job one day and just leave. They realised the unfulfillment of their existence and pursued a dream; obviously they had a talent and built upon it, but they did it. The very trait that was unacceptable to the constriction put upon them by the crowd is the source of the ability which draws the crowd.

It is too easy to just withdraw if you don’t fit in, but fitting in is overrated anyway. Your world needs the colour of who you are.
